2016 series newcomer and Orlando, FL native Eric Powell is set for a second season with TechSport Racing. The past season saw Powell deliver throughout the year with six podium finishes and one win and a 3rd place finish in the season ending points. High marks for some but certainly not what the very experienced racer was hoping for in a season he says “was strewn with bad luck”. Powell says he is ready to make amends in 2017 and give the team another championship.
“I am just ready to get out there at VIR in April. Last year didn’t go the way any of us at TechSport planned but the important thing is I learned a lot. We have worked so hard this off season to put this deal together and even harder to strengthen the team, learn about the cars and just analyze everything we can do better. I think I proved I had the pace last year and it just wasn’t all coming together at the end of races for me. That will change! I am super excited the series is growing and bringing a lot of new teams and great drivers, it Is just awesome. I’m ready for the fight!” says Eric.
Powell will once again be piloting the familiar #23 Mazda Mx-5 after speculation he might end up in a different machine, however the team decided to keep Eric’s long standing relationship with the brand Intact while the team will also be fielding additional entries from different makes.
“Well, at the start of a season you’re always a little worried that they get the rules package right with new cars coming in and that politics aren’t an issue but we can’t let that distract us from just doing our best. I’m not worried about any of those guys; I mean, I hope they are good and on point because we want to put on a good show. I know some really good guys will be in there. I want to race against the best.”
Look for Powell to be near the pointy end of the field all year with his typical attacking style. One last word from Team principal -Kevin Anderson: “We worked really hard to make this happen again and get him back in the car. Last year we took a chance on him and we are really glad we did. There are a lot of great drivers out there but Eric is definitely one of the best drivers in sportscar racing and has become an integral member of the team. This year will be much better for Him personally and for the team. We have been busy over the winter positioning the team for success, we brought on some new personnel, some great engineers. The whole TechSport Family is excited for the season to start.”
