Martin Fuentes continues to lead GT-A Sprint championship after two podium finishes at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. – Martin Fuentes had two different but similar fights on his hand during the pair of Pirelli World Challenge races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, but ended the weekend with a pair of second-place trophies in the No. 07 Garage Italia / Alpha Prime Ferrari 488 GT3.

After he qualified in third position in the GT-A class for the first of two races of the weekend, Fuentes – and the rest of the PWC field – waited through a two-hour delay for rain and fog at CTMP. When the race finally did start, the field was on rain tires as the track was still saturated and rain continued to fall. However, the rain quickly stopped and a dry line began to form, forcing drivers to take care of their wet weather tires which degraded as the track continued to dry.

Fuentes made the most of the mixed conditions, spending several laps working on and eventually passing the second-placed car in GT-A. With time in the race running out, he closed the gap to the GT-A leader but would settle for second place. He also started Sunday’s race in second position but lost one spot at the start and spent several laps working his way past his competitor. Once into second place, Fuentes drove unchallenged to the checkered flag.

With those two second-place finishes, Fuentes continues to lead the GT-A Sprint championship and is third in the GT-A overall championship, closing the gap to his competitors ahead of him.

“We had a great weekend in Canada,” said Fuentes. “We had two hard races and came away with two second places. Each race had a hard fight – on Saturday with the Lamborghini and Sunday with the Audi. Saturday’s race was very exciting and also very stressful due to the weather. We started with rain, and then it became damp, and then it became completely dry. The Ferrari and the tires held up well maybe with another couple of laps we could have won the race, but I was very happy to finish in second place. Thanks to Garage Italia, Hublot and all the guys on the team for making this happen.”

The next PWC race is this weekend’s Sprint-X round at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut where Fuentes will share the No. 07 Garage Italia / Alpha Prime Ferrari 488 GT3 with Cesar Baccarella.
