Both Camaro GT4.Rs to start in class top-three for PWC GTS Race 1
LEXINGTON, Ohio – Blackdog Speed Shop’s Tony Gaples and Lawson Aschenbach each turned in solid qualifying efforts ahead of the first Pirelli World Challenge GTS race of the weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Both of the Blackdog Chevrolet Camaro GT4.Rs qualified in the top three of their respective classes Friday afternoon at the 2.25-mile, 13-turn road course.
Aschenbach will start second and on the outside of the front row for Saturday’s 10:55 a.m. ET race in the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Camaro GT4.R. His time of 1:28.483 (91.86 mph) was just 0.399 seconds off pole position and marked Aschenbach’s best qualifying result since claiming pole position in the season-opener at St. Petersburg.
The four-time Pirelli World Challenge champion again leads the GTS Driver’s Championship – as does Blackdog Speed Shop and Chevrolet in the Team and Manufacturer standings – with nine podium finishes in 10 races.
“Another great day at Mid-Ohio… my favorite track!” said Aschenbach, a four-time winner at Mid-Ohio in GTS. “I’m really happy with that qualifying effort. Thanks to everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop for rolling a really good Chevy Camaro GT4.R right off the truck. The car felt really good in practice and then this afternoon for our qualifying run. If we can tweak on the balance just a little bit for Saturday and Sunday, we should be in great shape. The biggest thing we have going for us is our execution and consistency. It’s gotten us the lead in the championship after 10 races. Hopefully it will get us a couple of wins this weekend.”
Gaples, the GTSA Driver’s Championship leader, qualified third in class and 11th overall in the No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R. His best lap was a 1:29.464 (90.86 mph) that put him just 0.746 seconds off the class pole.
More importantly, he will start ahead of his closest championship challenger on the grid for Saturday’s race.
“That was a fun qualifying session. The Blackdog Speed Shop team did a great job of getting this Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R in a spot where I could push hard in the afternoon session. There’s some work to do where we can make the car better for the race tomorrow. For the most part, I feel like we have a chance to contend for a win and good points. At the end of the day, that’s what we all want. Let’s see how things play out tomorrow and Sunday.”
Race 1 for the Pirelli World Challenge’s GTS class is set for 10:55 a.m. ET on Saturday. Race 2 is scheduled for 9:05 a.m. ET on Sunday. Live race coverage from Mid-Ohio will be available at world-challenge.com/streamvideo/. CBS Sports Network will air GTS action at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
