Austin, Texas – The Red Dragon earned their first podium finish of the 2017 season today in the Pirelli World Challenge SprintX race at COTA. Jon Fogarty started eighth and escaped an early race incident involving Alvaro Parente and Patrick Long. He picked up a position in the incident. Several laps of yellow followed. When the green flag fell again, Fogarty was sixth position. Shortly after, the pit window opened for the mandatory driver change and the GAINSCO crew chose to keep Fogarty on track the first few minutes of the window, hoping for a clear lap to set a fast time for a solid starting position tomorrow. He entered the pits in the third position, when Porsche factory driver Wolf Henzler took over the driving duties. Wolf entered the race in the sixth position and clicked off quick times lap after lap. Within his first 10 minutes, he had raced to the fourth position. The hunt began for third position. Jordan Taylor was in the Cadillac ahead…hungry for a podium finish, Wolf’s pursuit was relentless. Lap after lap he reeled in Taylor, tight on his bumper, he was going for the pass and the yellow flag fell for a car stalled on the front straight. With just one lap to go, the green flag flew, Wolf attacked and picked off Taylor for the third position. He didn’t stop there, he quickly chased down the team Cadillac car with Ricky Taylor behind the wheel. There wasn’t enough time to make the pass, and Wolf took the checkered flag in third, earning the team’s third podium finish at their home track, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Jon Fogarty: “Good result today, it was definitely an improvement and what we needed. We’ve been working hard, the car was quite quick, especially on the re-starts and we fortunately we had a few of those. Over the long run, it was a little bit of a handful. Wolf did an awesome job, getting us in front of the McLaren and the Cadillac and on to the podium. I am super happy for GAINSCO Auto Insurance. We had agents and employees that were going to be here today, who couldn’t be because of the hurricane. They are working overtime taking care of all the policies. So, thanks to all of them and we wish they were here, but we are thankful for the opportunity to give them this podium.”

Wolf Henzler: “It was a tough race, especially once I was behind the Cadillac. It was tough to get close enough to overtake him, but in the end, we had a full course yellow and I had my chance on the restart. I thought we might have a shot for second place but it didn’t quite happen. Third was good though for the GAINSCO Auto Insurance team and I am looking forward to the race tomorrow.”

Bob Stallings: “Third podium for the Red Dragon here at COTA today. Great finish for our team and for Porsche. The drivers did a great job out there today…Wolf had a fantastic run passing the Cadillac at the end, which in turn helped Porsche with the Championship. It was a great day. We sure missed our GAINSCO agents and employees today, this podium is in their honor.”
