James Wilson is an American auto racing driver with humble roots, beginning his career with the Sports Car Club of America’s Solo (autocross) series in the late 90’s. Climbing the ladder in ProSolo, RallyCross, Time Trial, and NASA Club Racing, he sharpened his craft and earned two National Championship titles in the process. With the ultimate goal of competing in professional levels of Touring Car racing, James formed a plan– to buy and build his own racecar that would be able to be fielded in several series to maximize exposure and manage costs along the way.
Mazda Motorsports was heavily involved in the creation and development of the B-Spec / Touring Car B program where subcompact econo-hatches would race door-to-door in a level playing field across the SCCA Club, Grand-Am, and Pirelli World Challenge Series. With Mazda’s help, James built his #55 TCB Mazda2 and has successfully raced in seven Pirelli World Challenge races in 2013 and 2015, finish as high as 4th Place (Rounds 1 & 3, Circuit of the Americas, 2015) and earning the VP Racing Fuels “Hard Charger Award”. Along the way and due to his close support with Mazda and Black Armor Helmets, James has also appeared on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (October 2014), featured on the cover of SportsCar Magazine and seven page article (May 2015), feature articles on Mazda Motorsports’ website (October 2014 and June 2015), and has had full page features in Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom Magazine (Issue 23, 2015).
Professional-level racing has never been “cheap”, but James has found ways through creative planning and cost management to travel the country and race in the Pirelli World Challenge Series on a shoestring budget, while working two jobs to support his passion for motorsports and keep his family of four happy and healthy.
