Scuderia Corsa wins GT Crew of the Year Award in Pirelli World Challenge
Los Angeles, Ca. – With Pirelli World Challenge GTA Championship clinched at Laguna Seca with Martin Fuentes on Sunday, Scuderia Corsa claimed the latest piece of hardware of 2016 incredible season, inclusive of 3 Championships, 25 wins and 12 podiums. At Pirelli World Challenge Gala, Team has been also recognized with the Special GT Crew Award of the Year, a special recognition voted by all the Teams in the paddock.
Martin Fuentes and Scuderia Corsa had already secured the Pirelli World Challenge GT-A season championship even they arrived at the series’ final race of the season at Laguna Seca. However, Fuentes didn’t plan on just cruising through the final weekend of the season.
He stated his intentions loudly during qualifying on Saturday afternoon, lapping the 2.2-mile circuit in a time of 1:24.814 – securing pole position in GT-A and putting the no. 07 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia 12th overall. So strong was the performance that Fuentes was four positions ahead of the second-placed GT-A car.
“The Scuderia Corsa team did a great job and gave me a great Ferrari,” said Fuentes after qualifying. “The car was very stable and fast. I was happy to close the season with the last pole position of the year.”
However, the race brought a disappointing finish Fuentes as he was hit from behind on the opening lap, sending the no. 07 Scuderia Corsa / HUBLOT Ferrari 458 Italia into the tire barriers in turn three. Due to the damage, the car was retired from the race.
Fuentes and Scuderia Corsa have enjoyed a tremendously successful Pirelli World Challenge season: together they set a series record of nine victories, including seven straight to open the season, and seven additional podium finishes – putting Fuentes on the podium in 16 of the 20 races.
“People asked me if we were going to cruise this weekend, and my answer was ‘of course not’,” said Fuentes. “We wanted to score another win. Unfortunately, the result was not the one we wanted. But we still brought the championship home two races ago, and we are now just looking forward to next year and bringing the championship back.
“This has been an amazing season – the best season of my life. I’m very grateful to Scuderia Corsa for everything they’ve done. This championship was won by every single one of the members of Scuderia Corsa. I’m thankful for all the support from every member of Scuderia Corsa and all of our sponsors.”
For Scuderia Corsa today’s Pirelli World Challenge GTA Championship adds on to the IMSA GTD Championship, IMSA North Endurance Championship, the 24 Hours of Le Mans GT-Am win, the 12 Hours of Sebring and 6 Hours of the Glen victories, an incredible result that has never been done in history before.
“Today belongs to Martin,” said Giacomo Mattioli, Scuderia Corsa Team Owner “he did a fantastic job the entire year, he raced impeccably and today’s championship is a well-deserved reward for his hard work! At Scuderia Corsa, we are very proud and honored to have contributed to the first championship in his career.
“2016 has been an extremely good year for Scuderia Corsa” continued Mattioli “I am particularly proud of the Crew of the Year Award the Team earned last night; it feels special to be recognized by your competitors and peers. It shows respect. The guys deserve it”
