No. 31 Ferrari of Vancouver / TR3 Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 opens season with strong Saturday in Austin
Austin, Tex. – Wei Lu and Jeff Segal combined to finish in second position in the Pro/Am category of Saturday’s Pirelli World Challenge Sprint-X season at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas.
With this weekend marking his first start in World Challenge’s GT class, Lu put in an effort good enough for fourth on the overall grid and first in the Pro/Am category in Saturday morning’s qualifying session for the afternoon’s race.
With the weekend off to a strong start, Lu took the green flag in the No. 31 Ferrari of Vancouver / TR3 Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 for the afternoon’s 55-minute Sprint-X race. As the field took the green flag for the first time and headed into CoTA’s turn one Lu was hit from behind by another car which didn’t cause damage to the car but dropped Lu down to tenth position. Intent on driving a clean race and turning the Ferrari over in good shape to Segal, Wei pitted from tenth position for the mandatory driver and tire change.
“I knew that it was going to be important to get through the first corner without any problems or any contact, but unfortunately I was hit from behind,” said Lu. “It cost me a few positions but after that I just focused on putting in clean laps and running a strong pace. The Ferrari was handling very well and I knew if I didn’t make any mistakes Jeff could bring the car home in a strong position.”
Segal took to the track and made up positions three positions in the closing stages of the race, to finish in second position in Pro/Am and seventh position overall. He also set the fastest lap of the race, meaning he will start Sunday’s Sprint-X race from pole position.
“Wei did an excellent job to recover from being hit in the first corner and drove a great stint,” said Segal. “The Ferrari was really good here at CoTA so a big thanks to everyone at Ferrari of Vancouver and TR3 Racing. I’m happy that we had such a strong first race for Wei and we’ll try to finish even stronger tomorrow.”
Sunday’s Sprint-X race from CoTA will be shown live at world-challenge.com at 3:10 PM ET.
