Third overall for Aschenbach, P3 in GTSA for Gaples
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Blackdog Speed Shop’s pairing of Lawson Aschenbach and Tony Gaples reached the podium in the first Pirelli World Challenge GTS race of the weekend at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.
It sets up a championship battle in Sunday morning’s finale. Blackdog Speed Shop is unofficially tied for first in the GTS Sprint Team Championship after Saturday’s results.
Aschenbach finished where he started in the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, its first race since a major rebuild following the team’s previous race at Utah Motorsports Campus three weeks ago. The defending GTS Driver’s Champion remains alive for this year’s GTS Sprint title with a 14-point deficit heading into Sunday.
Aschenbach posted his fifth podium in seven races with Saturday’s result – four wins and now a third place. His best lap Saturday will put him third on Sunday’s grid, directly ahead of current points leader James Sofronas.
Gaples’ drive in his No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Camaro GT4.R to third in GTSA was one of the biggest moves Saturday. He started seventh in class and moved up two spots on the opening lap to fifth.
He stayed there for the better part of the race while reeling in fourth place, a spot he took with under five minutes to go. A lap later, Gaples moved up another spot for his third Sprint podium of the season. It also moved him to third place alone in the GTSA Driver’s Championship.
Sunday’s race also will determine the GTS Sprint Manufacturer Championship. Chevrolet stands third after Saturday’s race and four points out of the lead.
The final race for the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. ET on Sunday. Live race coverage will be available at World-Challenge.com as well as SiriusXM Channel 383.
LAWSON ASCHENBACH, NO. 1 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “Third place is a good result. There wasn’t a lot I could do in the race, but that shows how competitive this category has become. You almost have to wait for someone in front to make a mistake, and there wasn’t enough of one to move up. At the end of the day, we got another good points haul and have a clean Camaro GT4.R for tomorrow. It’ll be a big day with all three Sprint championships coming down to tomorrow. Tony and I will do all we can to get this Blackdog Speed Shop and Chevrolet Camaro programs the titles they deserve.”
TONY GAPLES, NO. 11 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “This was a fun day and fun race. It’s a pleasure to be back at Watkins Glen, especially on a day like today and with a car as good as our Camaro GT4.R. I wasn’t completely happy with qualifying but we had a good plan and setup for the race. Gaining two spots on the opening lap was big, and then I had a good fight with one of the Porsches for most of the middle of the race. We were able to close in on fourth place and I had a good run out of the Boot to make that pass. To end up on the podium is a great feeling and gives us all a lot of momentum going into tomorrow’s finale.”
