NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Blackdog Speed Shop Readies for Combo at Road America
Pair of Camaro GT4.Rs set for PWC GTS/GT Sprint doubleheader
LINCOLNSHIRE, Illinois – There’s no place like Road America for Blackdog Speed Shop. Yes, it’s the closest stop to the team’s headquarters at which Pirelli World Challenge races. More than that, it’s a circuit that the Blackdog program – and likely the majority of the PWC paddock – would list as its favorite stop.
It’s with that in mind that Blackdog Speed Shop and its two Chevrolet Camaro GT4.Rs head this weekend to the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit in Wisconsin’s scene Kettle Moraine for one of the biggest weekends of Pirelli World Challenge competition. Drivers Lawson Aschenbach and Tony Gaples – along with the rest of the GTS field – will race with the PWC’s GT category in a mixed weekend doubleheader.
Blackdog Speed Shop heads the GTS Team Championship standings after two of the season’s four Sprint events. Likewise Chevrolet leads in Manufacturer points.
It’s a relatively short two-hour drive from the team’s home base to the track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The drive back would be much more enjoyable with a couple pieces of hardware in tow.
Aschenbach, driver of the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, left with two trophies last year after a pair of runner-up finishes in GTS. The current Sprint Championship leader in class is a perfect four-of-four in 50-minute races this year after sweeping doubleheaders at St. Petersburg to start the season and again last month at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Gaples, who lives 90 minutes from Road America also is in prime championship position – second in GTSA points with his No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Camaro GT4.R. So far this year, he has two podium finishes in four starts: third-place showings at both St. Petersburg and Canada. A year ago, Gaples collected two top-five finishes in GTSA at Road America.
The Pirelli World Challenge GTS class will compete at Road America from Friday-Sunday. Qualifying is set for 9:40 a.m. ET on Saturday with Race 1 at 4:35 p.m. later in the day. Race 2 is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. CT on Sunday. Live race coverage will be available at World-ChallengeTV.com as well as SiriusXM Channel 383.
LAWSON ASCHENBACH, NO. 1 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “Road America is bar none one of the best tracks on the schedule. It has everything: speed, heavy braking, history and tradition… you could go on and on. It’s such a thrill to return every season, especially with the large Chevrolet presence at the circuit. However, there is a new wrinkle this year with a combined GTS/GT race. It will be interesting to see how the different drivers in the various classes behave around each other on the track. This has the potential to create some close quarters racing and it’s a challenge that everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop embraces. This is a great opportunity to build our Sprint points lead on a unique weekend.”
TONY GAPLES, NO. 11 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “There is hardly ever a bad day at Road America. It’s what a race track should be – the experience, the history. The way the long sections of the circuit run through the forest really heightens the sense of speed. We’ll get more of that with the mix of GT-class cars, which will make for an interesting dynamic. It’s been a long time since I competed in a multi-class race so this will be a great challenge. I’ve been happy with the Camaro GT4.R through the first part of the season. Taking that next step and winning at Road America would be incredible.”
