Continuing off of his momentum as the 2017 TCA Champion in Pirelli World Challenge, Matt Fassnacht has partnered with Murillo Racing for a full-season effort in both TCR and GTS SprintX. The team will feature a two-car lineup with the 2017 Audi RS3 LMS and the brand-new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT4. Both cars will compete in Pirelli World Challenge for the first time at Circuit of the Americas on March 23rd-25th.
With the combined driving prowess of Fassnacht and his SprintX co-driver, Christian Szymczak, 2018 looks to be a promising year. After years of successful club and semi-pro racing, Fassnacht debuted in Pirelli World Challenge in 2016, finishing the season as Rookie of the Year and fourth in driver standings in TCA. In 2017, he swept the TCA field with two race wins, three fastest race laps, and seven top-threes, eventually going on to win the championship. At the season opener of the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge this year, he fought his way onto the podium with co-driver Justin Piscitell. Fassnacht is anticipating some well-earned results and tough competition as he heads into the upcoming year:
“I had such a rewarding last year in the Mazda MX-5 in the TCA category, and making the leap to TCR and Sprint-X is an exciting next step for me. I’m looking forward to the challenge and close competition in both categories, and can’t wait to show the paddock what both cars are capable of. I also couldn’t ask for a better, quicker teammate than Christian, who has worked with Murillo for years now. With the expertise of the crew and the setup on those cars, I have no doubt that we’ll do well this year in both classes.”
For years now, Murillo Racing has been the team to beat in the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge, with multiple championships and countless podiums in the Street Tuner class. In 2018, the team has expanded into the Grand Sport Class with two Mercedes-AMG GT4s. While they build on past accomplishments in the IMSA-sanctioned series, expanding into Pirelli World Challenge will offer an impressive new playing field. “We’re thrilled to have Fassnacht on board for the season. Our team is ready to make some waves in the World Challenge paddock,” says Ken Murillo, team owner. “The series is a perfect opportunity for us to capitalize on our accomplishments in 2017, and I’m looking forward to seeing Matt on the podium.”
Pirelli World Challenge showcases some of the closest wheel-to-wheel sportscar racing in the country, and its sprint-race format puts each manufacturer, team, and driver to the test. As the Murillo Racing crew develop their new Mercedes and Audi programs, Fassnacht will continue to make a name for himself as one of the quickest drivers in sportscar racing.
