Webster, New York – BERG Racing team drivers John Weisberg, John Allen, and JT Coupal will contest the first twice-around-the-clock racing event of the 2017 racing season, the 24H Dubai, January 12-14, 2017.
The 24 Hours of Dubai is a 24 hour, multi-class sports car race held at the Dubai Autodrome in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race marks the first 24 hour event for Weisberg in nearly eight years.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into the endurance mode,” said Weisberg. “We did the VIR 13 Hour in November 2015 – this type of racing requires a slightly different mindset compared to the fast paced sprint racing we’re used to in the Pirelli World Challenge, but the competition level is so high it will feel like a 24 hour sprint!”
BERG Racing and REDCOM Laboratories, Inc. are equally excited to observe TCR spec racing, a European touring car formula destined for North America in 2017.
“I’ll be driving a SEAT Leon TCR car, a new type of limited TCR car coming to North America in 2017 under a different manufacturer,” added Weisberg. “I’m very excited to sample this new formula at such a great venue like the Dubai Autodrome.”
A limited TCR formula will be incorporated into the Pirelli World Challenge TC class in 2017, marking the first year of TCR competition in North America. The European TCR Series is represented by marques such as Alfa Romeo, Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru, Honda and SEAT. Largely composed of production sedans and hatchbacks, TCR races are sprint-race events contested on circuits throughout Europe and Asia.
Weisberg will be joined by BERG Racing client John Allen of Denver, Colorado. A longtime SCCA Pro racer and former aerospace industry leader, Allen is also keen to evaluate TCR machinery in anticipation of driving the Audi RS3 LMS TCR in 2017.
“I’m very excited to run my first international race at the Dubai Autodrome,” said Allen. “It’s my first trip to the Middle East, and I’m hoping to make it up to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world – and maybe ride a camel, too!”
Allen brings a knowledge of racing BMWs and Porsches to the team, and believes the experience in Dubai will ease the transition to the new front-wheel-drive TCR machinery.
“These TCR cars have proven themselves over the past few seasons in Europe, so it’ll be great to get my first front-wheel-drive laps in a proven racecar,” remarked Allen. “The SEAT Leon is very similar to what we are planning to run in Pirelli World Challenge for 2017, so I’m looking forward to getting as many laps in as possible to get comfortable. The team we’re running with, Zest Racecar Engineering, took 2nd in-class at this race last year, so expectations are high.”
Completing the trio of BERG Racing drivers, 16-year-old JT Coupal of Rochester, New York will be making his international racing debut at the Dubai Autodrome. Coupal, a junior at Allendale Columbia School in Rochester, New York looks forward to gaining international sports car experience.
“I cannot wait to get laps in at the Dubai Autodrome,” said Coupal. “We’ll be with Team ZRE in their SEAT Leon TCR car with John Weisberg and John Allen. I’ll also be competing in sprint races early in the weekend in a Ginetta G57. I can’t wait to get this weekend underway!”
Coupal looks forward to gaining experience in TCR machinery, in anticipation of future outings with BERG Racing in the United States. No stranger to success, JT has a great racing record despite his young age.
“I made my start in kart racing when I was 11,” Coupal said. “Soon after, I transitioned to SCCA Spec Miata and won four regional championships, so I feel ready to make the jump to TCR in Dubai and in North America with BERG Racing!”
