Fuentes gets closer to GTA championship with second places

Lexington, Ohio – Martin Fuentes steered the no. 07 HUBLOT/Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia to two hard-fought second place finishes this weekend the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the 15th and 16th rounds of the Pirelli World Challenge.

Although second on each day, the two races presented two different challenges for Fuentes. The first race, held Saturday afternoon, was a caution-filled race in which Fuentes narrowly missed a first-lap, first corner incident that collected several cars. The second race, held Sunday morning, was caution free. Starting from second position, Fuentes chased the eventual GT-A winner from green flag to checkered and while he kept the pressure up throughout the race, was unable to mount a challenge for the position.

The results move Fuentes closer to the GT-A championship with five races remaining in the 2016 season. Unofficially, Fuentes has earned 1454 points in the GTA championship and maintains a 252-point advantage over the next car in class.

With two second-place finishes, Mid-Ohio became a successful weekend despite a tough start for Fuentes and the Scuderia Corsa team.

“The weekend started off challenging, but it ended up being a good weekend for us,” said Fuentes. “We missed some practice because we had a mechanical problem and then the third practice was cancelled due to rain – so we didn’t have much time to set up the Ferrari. But we ended up having a good setup for both races thanks to Scuderia Corsa and we were able to keep adding to our points for the championship, which is the most important thing in our minds. We fixed some things from the first race and had a great car for the second race. Our big picture is winning the championship, and we are doing the right things right now.”

“After our challenging weekend at Road America, Martin and the Scuderia Corsa team responded in a very strong fashion,” said Roberto Amorosi, Scuderia Corsa technical director. “He drove two very smart races, staying out of trouble and getting maximum points despite not having as much practice time as the other cars.”

The races from Mid-Ohio will be shown on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, August 7 at 4:00 PM ET. The next round of the Pirelli World Challenge season will be August 12-14 at the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah.
