Four-time Champion Jon Fogarty stays physically fit and mentally sharp by competing in mountain bike races when he’s not at the racetrack. Fogarty competed in the Coast Hills Classic last weekend in Newport, Oregon. Two hundred individuals competed in the 24-mile race, including Fogarty’s son Will, who won his class. Fogarty finds mountain biking to be very similar in approach to racing The Red DragonTM and says the tremendous cardio and mental workout helps him prepare for the endurance required while racing the No. 99 McLaren: “It’s great – it’s exactly the same in terms of technical aspects: apex, braking, and there are places on the bike tracks where you need to use the shoulder similar to curbing. Carrying speed and momentum through corners on a bike is huge, just like a racecar, and you can definitely win and lose races in the turns. The downhill portions allow you to push the limits of traction between the tire and the ground, which again is very similar to racing the Red Dragon. Physically, mountain biking keeps the cardio systems firing on all cylinders, which really helps prepare me for the physical aspects of car racing. Wrestling a car through tight city streets with 22 other guys around you requires a driver to be in top form physically.” Fogarty raced his recently built his Niner “Jet 9” bike with RockShox/SRAM Suspension. He is sponsored by and races on Continental Tires.
A First for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing: This will be GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing’s first visit to the legendary Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
Testing Continues: Still looking to maximize the McLaren 650S GT3, the GAINSCO crew completed a seven-post shaker test last week under the direction of team engineer John Ward.
Jon Fogarty: “I’m anxious to get back to Mosport. It’s been a long time, since 2005, I think. I was driving a Porsche for Flying Lizards. It looked like we had the win in the bag and the motor blew. There have been some changes since then, so the visuals will be different and we have a bit of learning curve ahead of us. It’s still a fast place with high speed corners, good for aero cars and we have a good aero car. Can’t wait to get out there.
Bob Stallings, Team Owner: “I can’t wait to get to Mosport and get back to racing. It’s been a long intermission and we are ready to get rolling again. This will be my first trip to Mosport. I’ve heard a lot about it, lots of great racing history there. It will be fun to see it and hopefully we will make the trip worthwhile.”
