Phoenixville, PA – Off a sweep of two SprintX races at Utah Motorsports Campus, Calvert Dynamics and drivers Michael Lewis and Preston Calvert now head to Pirelli World Challenge’s penultimate event weekend at Sonoma Raceway in Northern California in a pair of Phoenix Performance prepared Porsches.
After a fire sidelined the team’s primary Porsche GT3R in Utah, Preston Calvert will make the move back to the GT Cup class, where he opened the season with a number of strong drives, including his first ever podium finishes in Pirelli World Challenge.
Also benefiting Calvert, he drove the No. 77 Porsche GT3 Cup entry at Sonoma in Pirelli World Challenge competition in 2015.
“I’ll be driving the GT3 Cup car in GT Cup at Sonoma for the GT races,” said Calvert. “The lack of a test day at Sonoma makes this a very challenging weekend for the teams. There is very little time to practice, only one hour total on Friday, before qualifying on Saturday. This limited track time makes it especially critical to establish the setup for the cars quickly and efficiently. The track is fun to drive, with lots of elevation change, and a mix of fast and slow turns.”
Calvert will strap into the No. 77 at Sonoma, with two races scheduled for the weekend. In October he will again face the GT Cup field at the season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but will also partner with Lewis in the SprintX endurance format.
For Lewis, double SprintX wins at Utah and a pole position in the GT class has set him up for a strong Sonoma outing in the No. 98.
“Sonoma Raceway is a very physical track. Nearly every turn has some sort of elevation change to it. This is a track on which it is fun to drive because of how busy you are in the car,” said Lewis, who is coming off a fourth place finish in GT in Utah. “Racing with the Verizon Indy Car series, once again, is noteworthy because of how the track develops from the different tire compounds that appear on the track’s surface. I look forward to arriving on Thursday to soak in the track atmosphere, to enjoying working with and spending time with the team, and enjoying driving our No. 98 Porsche 911 GT3R on an awesome circuit. It will be great to be back in front of some Californian fans as well.”
Pirelli World Challenge’s event weekend in Sonoma runs Sept. 16-18, with live video streaming available at www.world-challenge.com.
