Road America up next for Pirelli World Challenge GTS championship leaders

LINCOLNSHIRE, Illinois – Blackdog Speed Shop returns to Pirelli World Challenge competition this weekend at one of the biggest and best tracks in North America: Road America. It serves as a home race team, which is based about three hours away in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

The 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course that winds through the Kettle Morraine enjoys iconic status in racing circles and is a favorite of the team and its two drivers – Lawson Aschenbach and Tony Gaples. It’s also the perfect place for the pairing to try for the first victory for the new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.

“Road America is all about speed and performance,” Gaples said. “It’s going to be fantastic driving these two thundering beasts around the National Park of Speed this weekend!”

The team will field two Blackdog Speed Shop-sponsored entries with both Aschenbach and Gaples leading their respective categories in World Challenge’s GTS class. Their performance also has netted Chevrolet the lead in the Manufacturer’s Championship and Blackdog Speed Shop the Team’s points lead.

Aschenbach, in the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, leads the GTS Driver’s Championship with seven podium finishes in eight races. A four-time World Challenge champion – twice in GTS – he is eager to net the first victory with his new race car.

“Road America would be the perfect place for us to get that first win of the year for Blackdog Speed Shop and the first win for the Camaro GT4.R,” Aschenbach said. “This track has so much history… and speed! Winning a race at Elkhart Lake is incredible; you know you’ve done something special if you’re fortunate enough to do so. For us, we know we have a great car and a great team at Blackdog Speed Shop. We have been consistently up front in every event so there’s no reason to expect anything different. I’m not saying it will be easy but we do have a lot of confidence in our ability to run up front.”

For Gaples, any trip to Road America is a good one. Being close to home is great, the current GTSA Driver’s Championship leader says, but he would be just as big a fan of Road America if it were halfway across the country.

“Yes, I absolutely enjoy Road America. Who doesn’t?” Gaples said. “There isn’t a track around that mixes such long straights with as many high-speed corners and elevation change. It’s so satisfying to drive around. I can tell you that everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop considers it a treat to go there every year. Hopefully Lawson and I can put on a great show for them and the fans… and maybe net a victory while we’re at it!”

The Pirelli World Challenge GTS class will compete at Road America Friday through Saturday. Qualifying is set for 9:20 a.m. CT on Saturday with the first of two races set for 4:30 p.m. CT. Race 2 is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Live race coverage from Road America available at CBS Sports Network will air GTS action from Lime Rock at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 5.
