Pair of runner-ups: Aschenbach overall and Gaples in GTSA at CTMP
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada – Blackdog Speed Shop’s Lawson Aschenbach continued his run of consecutive podium finishes in the Pirelli World Challenge on Sunday with a runner-up finish in the GTS category with his Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.
The result at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was the sixth straight podium of the season for Aschenbach – the current GTS Driver’s Championship leader in the No. 10 Blackdog Camaro. Through six races, he has three second-place finishes and a like number of thirds.
Aschenbach started sixth but gained two positions on the opening lap before the race’s only full-course yellow. On the restart two laps later, he moved into third at the exit of the first corner and then took second on the long Andretti Straightaway.
Aschenbach remained within a second of eventual winner Jade Buford for the bulk of the remaining 40 minutes before settling in for a relatively stress-free, runner-up finish. It was a stark contrast to Saturday’s race where Aschenbach withstood five other competitors throughout the 50-minute race to finish third.
“It was a lot less stressful today, and I’m happy with a runner-up finish in our Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R,” he said. “Still it’s hard not to be frustrated by not being able to challenge for wins. The start went well for us although the first-lap yellow didn’t really help. Maybe I could have gotten by Jade early but it would have been difficult to hold him off the rest of the way. So today was good for the championship; I can’t complain about that. Thanks to everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop and Team Chevy for a great car once again.”
Teammate Tony Gaples, in the No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevy Camaro GT4.R, recorded a runner-up finish of his own in the GTSA category and placed 10th overall. It marked his third GTSA podium of the season after finishing second in both rounds at St. Petersburg.
Sunday, Gaples began from 11th overall on the grid but found it difficult to compete with the higher top-end speeds and power of some of his competitors.
“It was almost a carbon copy of yesterday’s race,” he said. “The pace in our Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R was OK but I was lacking straight-line power compared to some of the other competitors and the handling was compromised in spots. When you’re missing those two, it’s hard to make up positions. We gained more points in GTSA category so that’s never bad. Hopefully at Lime Rock both our Blackdog Camaros can be a little more competitive and challenge for wins.”
The combination of Blackdog Speed Shop and the Camaro platform is a winning one in Pirelli World Challenge. Blackdog Speed Shop is the winningest team in PWC GTS competition with 18 victories. The team won three consecutive GTS Driver’s Championships – Aschenbach in 2013-14 and Michael Cooper in 2015 – as well as the 2013 GTS Team title during Blackdog Speed Shop’s first season in the category. Chevrolet was the Manufacturer’s Champion that season, as well.
CBS Sports Network will air GTS action from CTMP at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 31.
There’s little rest for Blackdog Speed Shop with the team returning to Lime Rock Park on Friday and Saturday for the next doubleheader weekend for the Pirelli World Challenge.
