Fourth win of the season to go along with strong run by Gaples in Team Chevy/OMP/Eibach Camaros

LEXINGTON, Ohio – There’s just something about Mid-Ohio that seems to agree with everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop. Lawson Aschenbach drove his No. 10 OMP/Eibach Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R to his fourth victory of the year in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class Saturday to add another chapter in the team’s strong history at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The win was the fifth for Blackdog Speed Shop at the track since 2013 and the best combined showing for the team this year. In addition to Aschenbach’s 2.195-second victory, Tony Gaples finished eighth in the No. 11 OMP/Eibach Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R to tie his best finishing position of the season.

Blackdog Speed Shop now has five victories and 10 additional top-10 finishes at Mid-Ohio in World Challenge competition. Aschenbach also narrowed the gap to the GTS Driver’s Championship lead with three venues and six races remaining.

“This is such a big win for everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop,” said Aschenbach, who won his fourth straight Mid-Ohio GTS start. “Mid-Ohio has proven to be a big part of our championship runs the last couple of years so hopefully this is the start of another late-season push. I have a lot of confidence right now in myself, our Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R and the Blackdog Speed Shop guys. We have three more stops this year and have to make every race count!”

Aschenbach started third on the grid but powered to the lead after both cars on the front row had trouble at the standing start. Two cars crashed right away before Turn One to bring out the first of two full-course cautions. Neither seemed to phase Aschenbach who steadily opened the gap to second place each time.

He led all 29 laps a day after the scheduled first GTS race of the weekend was postponed due to weather.

“What a day today and what a great job by everyone on this Blackdog Speed Shop team,” Aschenbach said. “We knew the start was going to be critical and it was imperative to get a good jump and at least stay close to the leaders. Everything happened so fast once the lights went out and we launched at the start. This Chevrolet power gave me everything I needed to make a good getaway. Then it was a matter of keeping up a good pace and not making mistakes on the two restarts. This Team Chevy/OMP/Eibach Camaro Z/28.R was so, so good throughout and the Pirelli tires held up really well. I couldn’t have asked for a better car and team than what we had today.”

2016-07-31-blackdog-2Gaples also thrust himself into contention at the start by going from 12th to sixth during the first-turn melee. He showed exceptional command and control throughout by running in the top-six for nearly the entire 50 minutes.

Gaples and his Camaro Z/28.R proved equal to some of the newer GT4 machinery in fierce fights for the top-five in the race’s second half.

“That was really, really fun! I’ve always enjoyed racing at Mid-Ohio and today was another reason why,” Gaples said. “The start was pretty hectic and I was a little lucky to get through the first turn clear. From that point it was a matter of hitting my marks and trying to manage the Pirelli tires. This was good, hard racing all the way through and one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had in a long time. Thanks to everyone at Team Chevy, OMP and Eibach for helping to make this happen. And congratulations to Lawson and everyone on the Blackdog Speed Shop team. Hopefully we can take this momentum and build on it for the final handful of races of the year.”

CBS Sports Network will air GTS action from Mid-Ohio at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 11.

The next event for Blackdog Speed Shop in the Pirelli World Challenge is Aug. 12-14 from Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah.

For the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge season, Blackdog Speed Shop is proud of the support from its partners OMP, Eibach and Team Chevy.
