The triple-header Pirelli World Challenge weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin brought two victories and five total podiums for the Always Evolving team and their pair of Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3’s – marking the program’s most successful weekend in its short tenure in PWC’s top class.
James Davison, driving the no. 33 Always Evolving / Replay XD Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3, scored his second victory of the season in Sunday’s race. Starting from the third position in Sunday’s race, Davison picked up one position in the standing start and then took the lead early in the race with a pass into Road America’s uphill turn six. After that, he was never again challenged on his way to a three second victory.
His victory on Sunday capped a weekend where he finished second in Friday and Saturday’s race, keeping his Nissan GT-R GT3 on the podium throughout the weekend. “I’m just so happy for this team,” said Davison post-race. “The Always Evolving / Replay XD / AIM Autosport Nissan team has done such a fantastic job in our first season. I’m so happy to get us a well-deserved win. This has been a great weekend!”
Heitkotter took the no. 05 Nissan GT Academy GT-R GT3 to his fourth GT-A victory of the season in Friday’s race in dominant fashion as he led the field from the start of the race. Saturday’s race would see him finish in second position in GT-A, which put both he and Davison on the podium in the same race. Sunday’s race, in which he qualified on pole, came to an end prematurely when he had challenges on the launch of the standing start.
“I’ve never seen such rapid progress in pace over only half of a racing season,” said Heitkotter. “Congratulations to James on his win! He gets absolutely everything from the car and having him as a teammate has shown me some things I didn’t know were possible before. My weekend was up and down with a win in class to a DNF. It only sharpens my will to score as many points as possible the remainder of the season for this outstanding team and manufacturer!”
Team owner Erik Davis reflected on what has so far been the team’s most successful weekend to date in Pirelli World Challenge.
“Wow – that’s my initial reaction to this weekend for the Always Evolving Nissan NISMO GT-R team,” said Davis. “We thought Road America would be a good track for the GT-R GT3 to stretch its legs, but I don’t think we could have anticipated two wins and three second place finishes in three starts amongst this field of competition. I just can’t say enough about this team, our drivers and the car. We are hitting our stride and look forward to continuing to develop the platform and push for great results.”
The next round of the Pirelli World Challenge will be July 31-August 2 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
