GRANTSVILLE, Utah – Veteran John Weisberg of Webster, N.Y., paced Friday’s TC/TCA/TCB practice run at Utah Motorsports Campus with a time of 2:06.139 (86.990 mph) in his No. 5 BERG Racing Mazda MX-5 at the 3.048-mile, 14-turn outer course.
Weisberg, one-half of the husband-wife TC team with Dinah, held the advantage over local driver Vesko Kozarov of Salt Lake City, who recorded a 2:06.206 (86.944 mph) lap in his No. 3 CA Sport Nissan 370Z. Road America winner Tony Rivera of Vista, Calif., was third in his No. 97 Brass Monkey Racing Nissan 370Z with a 2:06.651 (86.638 mph).
In the TCA class, Joey Bickers of Moorpark, Calif., a double winner at Road America, drove his Atlanta Motorsports Mazda MX-5 to the leading position with a 2:13.420 (82.243 mph) with second going to Eric Powell of Orlando, Fla., at 2:13.725 (82.055 mph) in the No. 23 TechSport Racing Mazda MX-5. Last year’s TCB series champion Johan Schwartz of Huntersville, N.C., took the No. 66 Shea Racing Honda Civic Si to the third slot with a time of 2.14.100 (81.826 mph).
It was Mazda taking the top spot in TCB action with Ted Hough of Farmington, Minn., clocking a 2:26.146 (75.081 mph) in the No. 68 Breathless Racing Mazda 2. CTMP winner Henry Morse, 15, placed second in TCB practice at 2:26.154 (75.077 mph) in the Hale Motorsports Mazda 2 followed by Ohio’s Tom O’Gorman in the No. 94 Black Armor Helmets Honda Fit with a 2:27.005 (74.642 mph).
The Touring Class competitors will have a busy afternoon Friday at Utah Motorsports Campus with a 30-minute qualifying pair at 12:45 p.m. MDT and the first race of the weekend set for 4:40 p.m. MDT with a 40-minute feature.
