Elkhart Lake, Wis. – Dion Von Moltke, JD Davison, and Alec Udell led the GTA, GT and GT Cup practice, respectively, at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Road America presented by Cadillac. The weekend features Rounds 12 and 13 of the GT and GTA seasons and Rounds 11 and 12 for GT Cup.
Weather conditions for practice saw cloudless skies and air temperature reported at 78 degrees.
Early on in the session it was Michael Cooper, in the No. 8 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R., at the top of the charts ahead of Davison, in the No. 33 AE Replay XD Nissan GT Academy Nissan GTR GT3. Cooper’s fast lap at the eight-minute mark of the session was 2:07.256, ahead of Davison by four tenths with Milwaukee’s Peter Cunningham, in the No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura/HPD/RealTime Acura TLX-GT in third. As times came down, it was then Pirelli World Challenge four-time and defending GT Champion Johnny O’Connell, in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing ATS-V.R., going fastest with a time of 2:06.869.
In GTA, Michael Schein, in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche GT3-R, was fastest early ahead of Frankie Montecalvo, in the No. 66 DIME Racing Dime R&D Mercedes AMG SLS GT3.
GT Cup saw Sloan Urry, in the No. 22 TruSpeed Autosport Security National Mortgage/Avasis Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, set the early pace at 2:16.077 ahead of Corey Fergus, in the No. 00 Motorsports Promo Byers Porsche, US LED, Motul Porsche 911 GT Cup.
The 20-minute mark of the session saw Adderly Fong, in the No. 88 Bentley Team Absolute Bentley Continental GT3, set the quickest time at 2:06.749, ahead of Ryan Eversley, in the No. 43 RealTime Racing Acura/HPD/Red Line Oil/RealTime Acura TLX-GT who was followed by O’Connell, Cooper and Cunningham, with Bryan Heitkotter, in the No. 05 AE Replay XD Nissan GT Academy Always Evolving/Replay XD/Nissan Nismo GT3 GT-R in sixth.
In GTA, Schein still had the quickest lap, but Martin Fuentes, driving the No. 07 Scuderia Corsa Hublot Underarmour Ferrari 458 Italia, was second fastest, while Alec Udell, in the No. 17 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, was at the top of the GT Cup times ahead of Urry and Fergus.
The session was brought to a stop with 13 minutes to go as the No. 19 iRACERCOACHING.com Stephen Cameron Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 piloted by Drew Regitz suffered a mechanical issue and needed to be removed from the track. The fastest overall time at that point belonged to GTA driver Von Moltke, in the No. 23 M1 GT Racing Audi R8 GT3 with a 2:05.944.
First in GT and second overall at the stoppage was Eversley, who had improved down to 2:06.568 ahead of Fong in second in the GT class. Following on the GT time sheets were O’Connell, Cooper, Heitkotter and Cunningham.
Schein had also improved his quick lap to 2:06.811, putting him second in GTA and fourth overall on the charts.
In GT Cup, Udell’s 2:14.140 was still fastest in class, ahead of Urry and Fergus.
The green flag was back out with seven-minutes to go, allowing drivers a few flyer-style laps before the checkered.
As the checkered flew, Von Moltke’s 2:05.944 held for top spot overall with Schein second quick in GTA.
In GT, a last-lap flyer by Davison put him on top in class at 2:06.157 (second overall on the charts), ahead of Eversley and O’Connell. A late flyer by Patrick Long, in the No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, vaulted him to fourth in class, ahead of Fong, with Lime Rock Park Winner and Championship Points leader Alvaro Parente, in the No. 9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S, sixth.
In GT Cup, Udell was fastest at 2:12.456 with Urry in second and Fergus in third.
GT, GTA and GT Cup cars next take to the Road America course for qualifying, scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. Central. Folow live timing is available on world-challenge.com.
