It’s Panoz, Maserati, KTM, Porsche and McLaren in GTS Top 5
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Veteran Ian James drove the new No. 50 Team Panoz Racing Panoz Avezzano GT to the quickest time of Friday’s Pirelli World Challenge GTS practice at the legendary Road America four-time road circuit.
James clocked in Friday morning with a best lap of two minutes, 19.671 seconds for an average speed of 104.33 miles per hour to top the first five racers in five different auto makes in the highly-competitive GTS division.
Taking second in Friday practice was local favorite Jeff Courtney of Milwaukee in the No. 99 JCR Motorsports Maserati GT4 with a time of 2:20.242 (103.91 m.p.h.) followed by Martin Barkey of Huntsville, Ont., Canada at 2:20.334 (103.84 m.p.h.) in the No. 80 Mantella Autosports KTM K-Bow GT4, Lime Rock double winner Rodrigo Baptista of Spain in the No. 3 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR at 2:20.553 (103.68 m.p.h.) and Mark Klenin of Lone Tree, Colo., in the No. 63 Tender Belly/KRP McLaren 570S at 2:20.762 (103.52 m.p.h.).
Klenin was the leading GTS Am division racer Friday, coming off his class win at Lime Rock Park last month. George Kurtz was sixth overall and second in the GTSA class with his No. 04 Crowdstrike/GMG McLaren 570S at 2:20.836 (103.47 m.p.h.). Third in the GTSA category Friday at Road America was Austin Versteeg of Sandy, Utah at 2:21.219 (103.19 m.p.h.) in the No. 13 ANSA Motorsports KTM X-Bow.
Four-time PWC champion Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., took his No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R to seventh overall Friday at 2:21.030 (103.33 m.p.h.).
Leading the Touring Car class Friday was defending TC series champion Toby Grahovec of Celina, Tex., in the No. 1 Classic BMW BMW M235iR with a clocking of 2:27.901 (98.53 m.p.h.) over ST Racing’s Nick Wittmer of Montreal, Que., Canada in the No. 91 ST Racing BMW M235iR at 2:28.567 (98.08 m.p.h.) and Cody Ellsworth of Jupiter, Fla., in the No. 111 Racerink Motorsports Porsche Cayman at 2:28.617 (98.05 m.p.h.)
GTS Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday (June 24) at 9:20 am CDT.
