GRANTSVILLE, Utah – Patrick Gallagher of Thornville, Ohio, set the fastest qualifying time in an abbreviated qualifying session for Round 9 of the TC/TCA/TCB competition in his No. 54 Atlanta Motorsports Group Mazda MX-5. Teammate and TCA driver Joey Bickers, hailing from Moorpark, Calif., set the fastest TCA time in the No. 49 Atlanta Motorsports Group Mazda MX-5 Cup, while Redondo Beach, Calif.’s Henry Morse set the pole for TCB class in the No. 14 Hale Motorsports Mazda Mazda2.

Gallagher’s 2:04.280 lap provisionally afforded him the top position on the TC grid while Adam Poland (No. 33 Doghouse Performance Mazda MX-5) from Ft. Worth, Texas, secured second-position with a 2:05.287 lap. Nearby Salt Lake City, Utah, resident Vesko Kozarov’s 2:05.495 lap in the No. 3 CA Sport Nissan 370Z set a pace good enough for third. The separate TC Qualifying session was cut short when Kevin Krauss and the No. 88 Outlier/Scion Group/Porsche Cayman ran off-track early in the session, causing a red flag condition and preventing further fast-lap attempts for the remainder of the time slot.

In TCA, Bickers pole-setting 2:14.017 was followed by Daniel Williams (Scottsbluff, Neb.) with a 2.14:513 in the No. S.A.C. Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup. S.A.C. Racing teammate Elivan Goulart, from Shelton, Conn., drove his No. 70 Mazda MX-5 Cup car to a 2:14.592 lap that was good enough for third.

The TCB-leading time of 2:26.986 set by Morse was just 0.012-seconds ahead of the No. 94 Black Armor Helmets Honda Fit driven by Tom O’Gorman registering at 2.26:998. TC rookie and Chandler, Ariz., resident Canaan O’Connell took the No. 24 TechSport Racing Chevrolet Sonic into the third spot with a 2:27.272.

Said Gallagher, “Really nice to finally get up here, we have been working really hard all year to get some results and hopefully we can turn it into something. There’s points we need to make up. The race, we’ll see. I am not sure if our cars will race as well as their cars in straight line speed. I get a little tow on the front stretch and put in a mega lap because these guys at Atlanta Motorsports Group gave me a great car.”

“The track is pretty similar to this morning, it’s maybe a little hotter but it’s nice to be on the stickier Pirelli tires,” explained Bickers. “It gives you a lot more grip. I had trouble getting by someone in the beginning and had a hard time getting a clear lap but once I got by I was able to get a clear track and I could do a couple laps I was happy with and it was good enough for P1. I’m happy.”

“The gap between first and second qualifying was really close so this will be a good race,” Morse remarked. “I would like to thank Morse GPS powered by CalAmp, Pirelli for putting on this amazing event, FreemUSA for giving me the best race gear I have ever seen or worn in my entire life. Lastly I would like to thank Mazda and Rolling Hills Prep School for helping me in my school and racing as well.”

Round 9 of TC/TCA/TCB Competition gets underway at 4:40pm MDT Friday and will be streamed at www.MotorTrendOnDemand.com. Live timing will be available at LiveTiming.net/PWC/. Both links are available from World-Challenge.com
