Eversley Leads a Honda 1-3 Sunday in the PWC TCR Round 8 at PIR, Lewis Takes 2nd, but Wilkins DNF hurts his Title Chances

Jeff Sexton Records 2nd TCA Win of the Portland Weekend in Subaru

PORTLAND, Ore. – Current TCR class point leader Ryan Eversley extended his margin Sunday with a spectacular standing start and recorded his third TCR of the 2018 racing season Sunday at Portland International Raceway in the 58th Rose Cup Races featuring the Pirelli World Challenge.

For the veteran driver from Atlanta, Ga., it was an important race in his quest for the win in the debut of the TCR cars in the North American road racing series, as Eversley’s top challenger and Round 7 race winner Mark Wilkins never made the green flag in the 40-minute sprint event. Wilkins’ Hyundai i30 N stopped in turn three and was towed back to the paddock area with a mechanical issue.

“I feel badly for Mark as I was driving by for the start of the race,” said Eversley. “Mark is a good buddy of mine and we have raced together and against each other for many years. But it was a big break for us in the TCR title hunt. The RealTime Racing guys did a great job setting up the car for this track. The Honda Civic Type-R is a strong, solid car and we had to fight off Michael (Lewis) for the win. He tried to make a move a couple of times, but the Type-R was outstanding. I’m pleased with the performance this weekend, leading most of Saturday’s race and winning Sunday. Now, we’ll move to Utah for another strong weekend.”

At the start of the 31-lap TCR Sunday main event, Eversley took the lead in turn one after a sensational standing start of the second starting position in his No. 32 RealTime Racing Civic Type-R TCR car, as he dove inside pole sitter Lewis. Once Eversley took the top spot, he held his position and fought off any challenge Lewis posed at the 1.97-mile, 12-turn road course.

Lewis, a two-time 2018 race winner in the No. 98 Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb/Agajanian Hyundai i30 N, tried to slide by Eversley several times in the 40-minute race but couldn’t make the pass and had to settle for second, 0.612 seconds back of Eversley.

“Congrats to Ryan today as he got a great launch off the start,” said Lewis. “I could only follow him into turn one there. But my BHA Hyundai i30 N was a great car again due to our engineer John Ward and the whole team. The cars are pretty close with Hyundai and Honda and I needed Ryan to make a slight mistake to get by. But he didn’t make one. I pressured him several times and he didn’t move. I feel horrible for my teammate Mark. He had an issue off the grid and couldn’t make the green flag. After winning on Saturday, this has to be tough for him. This new TCR class is so much fun and the cars are awesome to drive. I can’t wait for Utah.”

Third went to former GT SprintX and GTS champion Michael Cooper in the No. 44 RealTime Racing Audi R8 LMS followed by Michael Hurczyn in the No. 71 FCP Euro by HRD Volkswagen GolF GI TCR and Nate Vincent in the No. 71 FCP Euro by HRD Volkswagen Golf GI TCR. Sixth through eighth Sunday at PIR were Mason Filippi in the No. 12 TFB Volkswagen Golf GI TCR, Anthony Geraci in the No. 69 Heinlein Racing Development Audi Sport RS3 LMS and Jarett Andretti in the No. 18 Copeland Motorsports/Tilton Racing Volkswagen Golf GI TCR.

In the TCA division, Jeff Sexton drove his No. 89 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS to a second straight race win this weekend at Portland International Raceway after a superb battle with his teammate Eric Powell in the No. 95 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS. Unfortunately, Powell’s car suffered a mechanical problem and had to retire from the event.

Second went to Spencer Patterson in the No. 79 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS followed by TCA point leader Tom O’Gorman in the No. 94 TOMO Racing Honda Civic Si and P.J. Groenke in the No. 25 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS.

“I was pushing Eric the whole race and our Subaru was very good this weekend,” said Sexton, who captured the TCA race on Saturday at PIR. “I just conserved the tire and was patient. At the end, we had a hood pin come loose and I slowed to not have the hood blow up by the wind shield. But, overall, it was a great weekend with my first two Pirelli World Challenge wins.”

Rounds 9 and 10 for the TCR/TCA classes will be held on August 11-13 at Utah Motorsports Campus in Grantsville, Utah.
