Teenager Gottsacker Records 1st PWC Win Sunday at PIR; Drives SIN R1 past Panoz, PF Racing & Blackdog in GTS SprintX

18-year-old impressive in 60-minute Round 8, Calvert Wins 1st GTSA Race

PORTLAND, Ore. – After impressive GTS SprintX performances in 2017 and 2018, it was only a matter of time before 18-year-old Harry Gottsacker of San Antonio, Tex., would get to stand on the top of the podium, and the teenager fulfilled his dream with a stellar drive to victory Sunday in the 58th Rose Cup Races featuring the Pirelli World Challenge presented by Honda Racing / HPD at Portland International Raceway.

Fighting off a strong GTS field and heat near the triple digits Sunday, Gottsacker drove his No. 69 Racers Edge Motorsports SIN R1 GT4 sports car to an 8.775-second GTS SprintX Round 8 win over Saturday’s race winners Ian James and Matt Keegan in the No. 50 Team Panoz Panoz Avezanno GT4 at the 1.97-mile, 12-turn PIR road circuit north of downtown Portland.

Gottsacker pitted early in the 60-minute contest Sunday and then drove away from a superb driver lineup including the James/Keegan combo, Scott Maxwell and Jade Buford in the No. 55 PF Racing Ford Mustang GT4, Michael Cooper and Tony Gaples in the No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R and Lawson Aschenbach and Andy Pilgrim in the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.

In the GTSA category, Dr. Preston Calvert came from behind to win in a sensational last lap finish with his No. 51 Team Panoz Panoz Avezanno GT4 for Calvert’s first solo GTS race win. Previously, Calvert had won in the GT SprintX class twice (2016) as well as in the GT Cup twice (2017).

“This track is a bit like a karting track which I grew up racing on,” said Gottsacker, the former world karting champion. “This win is a big lift off of my shoulders. We have been so close before, like yesterday (when I finished second). I want to thank the Racers Edge Motorsports guys. They gave me a tremendous car all weekend. Their strategy to pit at the right time was great today. This win helped us in the GTS point standings too. It was a just a great day for the team and myself.”

Rounding out the top-ten overall in the 32-car field Sunday was the GTS SprintX point leader duo of James Sofronas and Alex Welch in the No. 14 GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS, Calvert (solo), Saturday’s GTSA winners Randy Mueller and James Clay in the No. 3 EPIC Motorsports BMW M4 GT4, GTSA point leader Drew Staveley (solo) in the No. 12 Ian Lacy Racing Ginetta G55 GT4 and Greg Liefooghe and Henry Schmitt in the No. 88 Stephen Cameron Racing BMW M4 GT4.

“It was a great experience to win in the Panoz and in GTS in a solo drive,” said Calvert, a retired doctor now enjoying a new racing career at age 63. “I had a good pit stop and got in a good back and forth battle with the No. 3 BMW (Clay/Mueller). I was able to drive the car hard into turn seven and get to the lead. It has been a great journey to come into the Pirelli World Challenge and win races at my age at 63. This was a special win to come from behind.”

Placing runner-up to Calvert was the Mueller/Clay duo followed by Staveley, Liefooghe/Schmitt and the pair of Toby Grahovec and Chris Ohmacht in the No. 92 EFT Global/CAO/Classic BMW BMW M4 GT4.

The next GTS SprintX events (Round 9 and 10) will take place on August 10-12 at the Utah Motorsports Park at the PWC Grand Prix of Utah.

The GTS SprintX Rounds 7 and 8 will premiere on CBS Sports Network on July 25 at 8 p.m. EDT.
