GRANTSVILLE, Utah – David Ostella of Maple, Ontario, Canada posted the fastest speed of SprintX practice Thursday at Utah Motorsports Campus in the No. 23 M1 GT Racing Audi R8LMS Ultra.
The 24-year-old former open-wheel star clocked a best time of one minute, 49.271 seconds at a speed of 101.125 miles per hour in preparation for Saturday’s Round 3 60-minute, two-driver contest on the 3.048-mile, 14-turn outer circuit at UMC. Ostella will co-drive with team owner Walt Bowlin in Saturday’s SprintX feature, while veteran Dion Von Moltke will team with Ostella in Sunday’s 60-minute event.
SprintX CTMP winner Michael Mills of Houston, Tex., recorded the second fastest speed with a 100.418 m.p.h. lap Thursday with his Mills Racing BMW Z4 with James Sofronas of Villa Park, Calif., third at 99.363 m.p.h. in the familiar blue No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3R. Mills will co-drive in the doubleheader with Kuno Wittmer of Montreal, Que., Canada, while veteran Brent Holden of Newport Beach, Calif., team with Sofronas on Saturday and Sunday. Holden will compete the GTA class this weekend in the No. 14 also.
Dr. Preston Calvert of Potomac, Md., who will co-drive with Andrew Davis of Athens, Ga., finished the 30-minute SprintX practice session in fourth position at 99.022 m.p.h. Calvert will be doing double duty at Utah as he competes in the GTA division in the No. 77 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3R. Fifth in Thursday’s SprintX practice was local driver David Askew of Salt Lake City in the No. 63 DXDT Audi R8 Ultra GT3 at 97.551 m.p.h., as Askew will pair with James Burke of nearby Tooele, Utah, for the Saturday and Sunday 60-minute features.
In addition to the SprintX competitors Thursday at UMC, sports car veteran Peter Kox of Eindhoven, Netherlands continued the testing of the all-new No. 93 Acura NSX GT3 sports car at Utah Motorsports Campus after a rain-shortened session at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course two weeks ago. Kox drove in the SprintX practice Thursday with a best speed of 101.125 m.p.h.
Qualifying for Saturday’s SprintX Round 3 race will take place Friday at 3:05 p.m. MDT.
