TOOELE, Utah – Salt Lake City’s Vesko Kozarov scored the Pirelli World Challenge TC pole for Round 13 at Miller Motorsports Park and the Ford Grand presented by VP Racing Fuels. In TCA, Jason Wolfe, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio will start first on the grid, while Canadian Glenn Nixon, of Mission, B.C. will start on TCB pole.
Early on in the session, Ernie Francis Jr. of Davie, Fla. in the No. 98 Breathless Racing/Time4Learning Mazda MX-5 went to the top of the charts with a 2:06.202 in TC, followed by Kozarov driving the No. 3 Skullcandy Team Nissan Nissan Altima with a 2:06.492.
Points leader Corey Fergus of Columbus, Ohio in the No. 00 Motorsports Promotions USLED/Axis Roofing/AERO/RSS/Motul Porsche Cayman was another driver posting quick times early in the session, with a lap at 2:06.879.
Kozarov eventually dropped his time to 2:06.162 to score pole narrowly ahead of Francis Jr. with Fergus set to start third for Friday’s race.
In TCA, it was Patrick Seguin of Ottawa, ON in the No. 39 Team OST Racing helpkevinproject.com Honda Civic Si who went fast early in the session moving from a 2:13.675 to a 2:12.358.
At the 13-minute mark, Jason Wolfe of Mount Vernon, Ohio in the No. 36 Kinetic Motorsports Wolfe Trucking Kia Forte Koup set the fastest TCA time of the session with a lap at 2:11.687.
Wolfe currently leads the TCA points ahead of Seguin with a three-race weekend on tap for Touring Car classes at Miller Motorsports Park.
TCB points leader Johan Schwartz of Huntersville, S.C., in the No. 25 Tech Sport Racing ZERO Cancer Chevrolet Sonic found speed early in the session, notching the provisional TCB pole with a 2:27.842.
That wouldn’t last, however, as a lap of 2:26.962 was turned in by his Championship rival Glenn Nixon of Mission, B.C., driving the No. 58 Racing.ca LaptopScreen.com/ClubRacing.com/Nixon Prosports/HPD Honda Fit which was good enough to take pole.
Nixon’s teammate, Andrei Kisel, of North Vancouver B.C. in the No. 57 Racing.ca/LaptopScreen.com MINI Cooper qualified second after posting the fastest lap of the morning practice session. Schwartz will start third as he was able to improve his lap time to 2:27.256
For Kozarov, it’s his third pole of 2015, while Wolfe scored his third pole of the season. Nixon will start on pole for the third time this season.
Results are provisional until posted final.
“It was pretty typical here, windy and dusty. We were quick today but qualifying really saw the true competition with Ernie (Francis Jr.) just a tenth behind,” said Kozarov. “My Nissan really doesn’t have an advantage here. With the bigger track, some spots are better for me and other places not so much. We’ll be ready for today’s race, for sure.”
“This track is much different than Mid-Ohio with the longer straightaways and longer corners,” said Wolfe. “It’s a lot more load on the front the tires, so, when we go into the race, it makes it very important to manage the tires. We don’t want the tires to go off too such since we are battling a little mid to exit push (understeer) already. I was happy with our qualifying lap. It was good. I like this layout. We ran the west loop last year here.”
“This course is fun and has nice long straightaways,” said Nixon. “There are some technical bits too. This track works good for our Racing.ca/Club Racing team. Drafting isn’t as important here as at Road America. But you will need it in the race. This configuration is definitely better than the course last year. I really love the big layout. Last year’s track was a bit of a bull ring. This should make for better racing today. The dust doesn’t really bother our cars with just 100 horsepower. It actually makes it fun to race.”
TC, TCA and TCB drivers now get set for Round 13 scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Mountain/6:30 p.m. Eastern. Watch the race live at world-challengetv.com or motortrendondemand.com.
