LEXINGTON, Ohio – Young Michael Cooper of Syosset, N.Y., drove his No. 8 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R. to the fastest GT class practice lap Friday with a time of 1:20.369 (101.14 miles per hour) in the opening round of action Friday morning at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as part of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio presented by Honda Racing.
Cooper, 28, won a Mid-Ohio GT 50-minute sprint feature last year in his rookie season with Cadillac Racing and is currently tied with Patrick Long for the GT Overall point lead with 183 points each.
Trailing Cooper Friday in the 30-minute practice was his Cadillac Racing teammate Johnny O’Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., who piloted the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R. to 1:20.501 (100.97 m.p.h.) followed by 2015 Mid-Ohio double winner Ryan Dalziel of Scotland in the No. 2 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 at 1:20.630 (100.81 m.p.h.), last year’s GT Cup Mid-Ohio winner Alec Udell of The Woodlands, Tex., in the No. 17 Euroworld Motorsports/GMG Porsche 911 GT3 R at 1:20.650 (100.79 m.p.h.) and reigning GT series champion Alvaro Parente of Portugal in the No. 9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S at 1:20.741 (100.67 m.p.h.)
Taking positions six through ten Friday morning was Bryan Sellers in the No. 6 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S at 1:20.891 (100.49 m.p.h.), current GT Sprint point leader Long in the No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R at 1:20.923 (100.45 m.p.h.), Kyle Marcelli of Barrie, Ont., Canada at 1:20.945 (100.42 m.p.h.) in the the No. 61 RFerri Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3, Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 4 Magnus Racing Audi RS8 LMS at 1:21.502 (99.73 m.p.h.) and VIR SprintX winner Daniel Mancinelli of Italy in the TR3 Racing/The Collection Ferrari 488 GT3 at 1:21.569 (99.65 m.p.h.).
Topping the GTA division Friday in practice was last year’s Mid-Ohio double winner Michael Schein of Glen Cove, N.Y., in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R with a time of 1:21.657 (99.38 m.p.h.) followed by Tim Pappas of Boston in the No. 54 Black Swan Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 at 1:22.510 (98.51 m.p.h.) and current GTA point leader James Sofronas of Villa Park. Calif., in the No. 14 GMG Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R at 1:22.563 (98.45 m.p.h.).
Pacing the GT Cup division Friday was Yuki Harata of Japan in the No. 55 Dream Racing Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo at 1:26.260 (94.23 m.p.h.)
GT/GTA/GT Cup qualifying will get underway Friday afternoon at 5:20 p.m. EDT at the famed 2.258-mile, 13-turn permanent road course.
