Ryan Eversley Sweeps TCR Weekend for Honda, Clinches TCR Title; Travis Washay takes Volkswagen to TCA Victory Sunday
Eversley & Filippi go 1-2 for RealTime Racing in Honda Civic Type-R TCR
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Ryan Eversley completed a “dream” weekend with his second TCR race victory of the weekend Sunday at Watkins Glen International in the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Watkins Glen presented by TM Performance.
The Atlanta, Ga., veteran racer secured the TCR Drivers’ championship with another impressive win at the controls of the all-new No. 43 RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type-R TCR machine at 3.4-mile, 11-turn historic road circuit in upstate New York.
Starting second on the grid Sunday, Eversley took over the lead from pole winner Michael Lewis early in the 40-minute sprint event and held the advantage throughout the 18-lap main event.
Eversley’s young RealTime Racing teammate Mason Filippi of Alamo, Calif., brought home a 1-2 finish for the Honda Civic Type-R, just 0.290 seconds behind the winner in the No. 44 RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type-R TCR.
With his double win weekend, Eversley made history as the first Pirelli World Challenge TCR champion with 276 points over second place Michael Lewis at 259 and third place Mark Wilkins at 229. In the TCR Team championship, Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian won over RealTime Racing, 284-272, while Hyundai took the TCR Manufacturers’ title over Honda, 115-103.
“My goal coming into this weekend was to try to get a pole, and try to maximize points,” said Eversley. “We figured if we got second in both races and Michael Lewis maxed out points, we could still win the championship. When we got the pole that was good and when I got the lead into turn one I knew that I could at least get second place in the race. It’s probably the best way we could have won it with a double win.
“Once we came out of the ‘boot’ and Lewis’ car fell on its face, I knew we had it right there and then later in the race Wilkins had some issues too. That sucks because nobody wants to beat anybody that way. We wanted to go at it cleanly, nose-to-tail, side-by-side like Saturday.
We had the most podium finishes which means we had the best reliability, and that’s what Honda is known for. So, when you’re talking about race cars and JAS Motorsports building cars for Honda since the 90’s, I knew right away that it was going to be a successful and consistent program.”
Placing third in the TCR class Sunday was Syracuse freshman J.T. Coupal of Rochester, N.Y., in the No. 77 Compass Racing Audi Sport RS3 LMS followed by Jerimy Daniel of Montreal, Que., Canada in the No. 2 The Racing Company Audi Sport RS3 LMS and Lewis, in the No. 98 Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian Hyundai i30 N TCR.
In the TCA category, veteran Travis Washay of Milford, Conn., captured his first race of the 2018 PWC campaign in the No. 30 Indian Summer Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI over Jeff Sexton of Austin., Tex., in the No. 89 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS, Spencer Patterson of Pittsburgh, Pa.,
in the No. 79 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS and TCA series champion Tom O’Gorman of Mason, Ohio, in the No. 94 TOMO Racing Honda Civic Si.
“Our car does have some more legs on the straightaway, but we really suffer in braking and cornering, so we knew we had to find that balance,” said Washay. “That’s really been the struggle that we’ve had all year with developing this Volkswagen for PWC. They have the hardest job in the world trying to balance these cars per track because every track it’s a bit of a crapshoot in practice to see who’s going to do well. I watched my lap times today. They were exactly the same as Saturday, but I just did them every lap.
“I couldn’t be happier to get myself and the VW GTI on the podium this year. It’s really gratifying when you do all the work yourself. TCA is where you can still build the car from scratch or from stuff you can buy online, and I think it’s really important to preserve that heritage in motorsports and especially in road racing. It’s a better feeling to know that you’re the one that’s turned the wrenches on there.”
O’Gorman won the TCA point title with 258 over Patterson’s 218, while TechSport Racing captured the TCA Team crown with a 288-255 over TOMO Racing. In the TCA Manufacturers points, Subaru defeated Honda, 112-97.
