Young JT Coupal Post Tops TCR Time Friday in Practice at the Glen; O’Gorman Leads TCA Contingent Friday
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Teenager J.T. Coupal surprised the TCR division Friday morning at Watkins Glen International by securing the quick time in the first round of practice for this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Watkins Glen presented by TM Performance.
Coupal, the 18-year-old driver from nearby Rochester, N.Y., drove his No. 77 Compass Racing Audi Sport RS3 LMW sedan to the quickest time of the TCR competitors with a one minute, 58.642 seconds at an average of 102.31 miles per hour over the 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course.
Second went to current TCR point leader Ryan Eversley of Atlanta, Ga., in the No. 43 RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type-R with 1:58.727 (102.24 m.p.h.) followed by Jerimy Daniel of Montreal, Que., Canada, in the No. 2 The Racing Company Audi Sport RS3 LMS at 1:58.774 (102.20 m.p.h.), Anthony Geraci of Glen Head, N.Y., in the No. 69 Heinlein Racing Development Audi Sport RS3 LMS at 1:59.319 (101.73 m.p.h.) and Michael Hurczyn of Granby, Conn., in the No. 71 FCP Euro by HRD Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR at 1:59.346 (101.71 m.p.h.).
Other top TCR cars included veteran Mark Wilkins, in the No. 99 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai i30 N TCR, at 1:59.618 (101.48 m.p.h.), Jarett Andretti in the No. 18 Copeland Motorsports Volkswagen Golf GTI TC at 1:59.721 (101.39 m.p.h.) and four-time race winner Michael Lewis, in the No. 98 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai i30 N TCR, at 1:59.782 (101.39 m.p.h.).
In the TCA category, series point leader Tom O’Gorman paced the field in his No. 94 TOMO Racing Honda Civic Si at 2:12.178 (91.84 m.p.h.) Friday morning with second going to Jeff Sexton in the No. 89 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS at 2:12.875 (91.35 m.p.h.) and third to Spencer Patterson in the No. 79 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ tS at 2:12.895 (91.34 m.p.h.).
The second TCR/TCA practice session on Friday is set for 4:15 p.m.
