Veteran Ian James Takes Panoz Avezzano to GTS Pole Saturday; Courtney Notches GTSA Pole in Maserati
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Ian James of Paradise Valley, Ariz., claimed the GTS pole position Saturday at Watkins Glen International in the No. 50 Team Panoz Racing Panoz Avezzano GT4 sports car in preparation of Saturday’s GTS 50-minute event as part of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Watkins Glen presented by TM Performance.
The veteran James posted the fastest qualifying time late in the session with a one minute, 55.040 seconds at 105.52 miles per hour, a new PWC GTS track mark. James has scored two GTS Sprint victories in 2018 after winning six races in 2017 in the No. 50 machines.
Second in the GTS Race 1 grid will be Jade Buford of Nashville, Tenn., in the No. 55 PF Racing Ford Mustang GT4 with a 95 (10:55.180 (105.39 m.p.h.) followed by five-time PWC champion Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R at a 1:55.341 (105.24 m.p.h.), Patrick Gallagher of Thornville, Ohio, in the No. 10 PF Racing Ford Mustang GT4 at 1:55.400 (105.19 m.p.h.) and young Harry Gottsacker of San Antonio, Tex., in the No. 69 Racers’ Edge Motorsports SIN CAR 1 GT4 at 1:55.586 (105.02 m.p.h.).
In the GTSA division, Jeff Courtney of Milwaukee, Wis., won the pole position in No. 99 JCR Motorsports Maserati Grand Turismo GT4 with a lap of 1:55.768 (104.85 m.p.h.) over Mike Hedlund of Redwood City, Calif., in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS GT4 at 1:56.058 (104.59 m.p.h.) and Nicolai Elghanayan of Laguna Beach, Calif., in the No. 71 Marco Polo Motorsports KTM X-Bow GT4 at 1:56.595 (104.11 m.p.h.).
Saturday’s GTS/GTSA Race 1 is scheduled at 4:10 p.m. EDT with Sunday’s Race 2 at 11:05 a.m. EDT.
