Veteran Nick Wittmer Takes the ST Racing BMW M4 GT4 To Fast Speed Friday in PWC GTS SprintX Practice at VIR

Wittmer easily bests GTS track record with cooler conditions

ALTON, Va. – Veteran racer Nick Wittmer of Montreal, Que., Canada was the quickest driver in the GTS SprintX practice rounds Friday at VIRginia International Raceway in preparation for this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Virginia presented by Audi Sport.

Wittmer, one of three Wittmer brothers racing in North America, posted a blistering time in the No. 38 ST Racing BMW M4 GT4 at the 3.27-mile, 17-turn permanent road circuit Friday afternoon in cloudy, cool conditions with a best lap of one minute, 53.715 seconds (103.52 miles per hour), easily besting the existing track qualifying mark of 1:55.144 (102.23 m.p.h.) set last year by Jeff Courtney.

Wittmer, teaming with college student Samantha Tan of Toronto, won the pole for the GTS SprintX Round 2 race last month at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the 60-minute, two-driver event.

“Sam did most of the testing Thursday at VIR and we test up the BMW pretty well on Thursday,” said Wittmer. “We decided to make a qualifying run today with new sticker tires and, when I saw that time post on my dash, I knew we had good setup. Now, Sam will qualify the car Saturday morning for Saturday afternoon. I think our BMW is looking good right now. I’m anxious for the two GTS SprintX events this weekend.”

Endurance sports car star Colin Braun of Rock Hill, S.C., notched the second quickest time of the day in GTS SprintX with his No. 04 Crowdstrike/GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS at 1:53.770 (103.47 m.p.h.) followed by Christian Szymczak of Santa Rosa, Calif., in the No. 34 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 at 1:53.773 (103.46 m.p.h.), Kyle Marcelli of Midland, Ont., Canada, in the No. 13 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR at 1:53.857 (103.339 m.p.h.) and six-time 2017 GTS race winner Ian James of Paradise Valley, Ariz., in the No. 50 Team Panoz Racing Panoz Avezzano GT at 1:53.883 (103.36 m.p.h.).

In the GTS SprintX Am class, former TC series champion Toby Grahovec of Celina, Tex., took the top spot with a 1:54.645 (102.68 m.p.h.) in the No. 92 ClassicBMW.com BMW M4 GT4 followed by Jon Miller of Orange, Calif., in the No. 36 ST Racing BMW M4 GT4 (Wittmer’s team car) at 1:54.703 (102.63 m.p.h.)

Qualifying for the GTS SprintX class is set for Saturday at 10:40 a.m. EDT with Round 3 of the GTS SprintX division scheduled for 3:40 p.m. EDT. Sunday’s GTS SprintX Round event gets underway at 1:50 p.m. EDT.
