Spain’s Miguel Molina Quick in His 1st VIR Visit in GT SprintX Friday in Pirelli World Challenge Practice with the R. Ferri Ferrari

Molina, Vilander look to be the favorites in the GT SprintX Doubleheader

ALTON, Va.  – Friday might have been the first official visit to Virginia International Raceway for Spain’s Miguel Molina, but you would have never known it with a stellar practice performance with the No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3.

Molina, a double race winner with Finland’s Toni Vilander at COTA last month, immediately claimed VIR as one of his favorite tracks after posting the quickest practice time Friday in the GT SprintX class at the 3.27-mile, 17-turn picturesque road circuit.

Molina drove the Ferrari to a best lap of one minute, 43.220 seconds (114.04 miles per hour) in the afternoon after Maxime Soulet piloted the No. 3 K-PAX Racing Bentley Contnental GT3 to a 1:42.964 (114.30 m.p.h.) in the cooler morning session.

“Ever since yesterday (Thursday), this is one of the most favorite race tracks that I’ve ever been,” said Molina. “I think it’s very challenging. You don’t have any moments that you can relax on the track because it’s quite demanding. I’m really happy to be here and to learn this track because it’s old school. In my time in DTM, I was racing at Zandvoort (in the Netherlands) and it’s quite similar to this and I really like these kinds of tracks. The track is black and white from something like COTA. Today the car was good. We had a good test. We’re trying to focus on qualifying tomorrow because we realized that it’s difficult to overtake here. So today we did well, feel good for Saturday, and we’re quite confident.”

Another Ferrari, the No. 31 TR3 Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 driven by Jeff Segal of Miami, Fla., was second quickest and the top Pro-Am car in the afternoon with a 1:43.252 (114.01 m.p.h.) followed by Rodrigo Baptista of Brazil, Soulet’s teammate, in the No. 3 K-PAX Bentley Continental GT3 at 1:43.707 (113.51 m.p.h.), 2017 VIR race winner Daniel Morad of Canada in the No. 2 CRP Racing/DeVilbiss Mercedes-AMG GT3 at 1:43.790 (113.42 m.p.h.) and VIR track record holder Mike Skeen of Charlotte, N.C., at 1:43.871 (113.33 m.p.h.).

Sixth overall and second in the Pro-Am division was Alessandro Bressan of Italy in the No. 55 Dream Racing Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan GT3 at 1:44.092 (113.09 m.p.h.). Bressan will team with Long Beach GTA class winner Yuki Harata of Japan.

Qualifying for the GT SprintX category is scheduled for Saturday at 9:40 a.m. EDT with Round 3 of the GT SprintX division scheduled for 1:25 p.m. EDT. Sunday’s GTS SprintX event gets underway at 11:30 a.m. EDT.

ALTON, Va. – GT SprintX practice results from the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Virginia presented by Audi Sport Friday at VIRginia International Raceway.
