‘Super Sub’ Brett Sandberg filled in for full-season driver Phil Fogg Jr. over the weekend and delivered Zoro Racing’s fourth podium of the season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio in Rounds 12 and 13 of the Pirelli World Championship.
Sandberg qualified third on the grid for Saturday’s race. Despite a quick pit stop under green flag conditions for a tire puncture that saw the No. 18 Zoro Racing Porshe fall to the rear the field, Sandberg drove all the way back up to sixth at the checkered flag.
Race 2 saw Sandberg once again start fourth and in a similar performance, drove the No. 18 Zoro Racing Porsche up to third at the finish.
The result marked ‘Super Sub’ Sandberg’s second podium for the team.
Zoro Racing’s previous podium finishes came earlier this year with a win at St. Pete, a third place result at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, and a third place result at Road America.
The Mid-Ohio events will be televised on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, August 9, at 4:00 PM ET.
Zoro Racing will next be in action at Miller Motorsports Park for the penultimate rounds of the Pirelli World Challenge Championship.
RACE 1, BRETT SANDBERG: “We had a really good car at the start of the race and we started on qualifying tires versus sticker (new) tires. That helped us out in the beginning. We had a really aggressive set-up on the car and it was really strong. As the race progressed, the car started to go off and the car was really darn loose after about 10 laps in. It was just about tire management toward the end of the race. After the caution, I thought we had a tire puncture so we pitted. Overall it was a great effort for everybody at Zoro and TruSpeed.”
RACE 2, BRETT SANDBERG: “It went really well today. The Zoro car was very consistent throughout the entire race. The guys did a great job making some changes and improving the car from yesterday. Overall we had good race pace. It was a good run and I’m happy to get another podium result for Zoro Tools.”
TYLER TADEVIC, TRUSPEED AUTOSPORT TEAM OWNER: “Way to go Brett (Sandberg) in the Zoro car on a third place finish. After the final restart, the officials reordered the field and gave first and second place an additional lap so effectively it ended our race for the win and the best we could hope for was third place. Kudos to Brett (Sandberg) for bringing the car home in third place. I’m really proud of the job he did. They referred to him as the ‘Super Sub’ over the intercom and I’d love to hear that more. He’s done a great job for us. We’re looking forward to having Phil Fogg Jr. back with us driving the Zoro car at Miller Motorsports Park.”
