Lexington, Ohio – A beautiful weekend at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course and Rounds 11 & 12 of the Pirelli World Challenge GTS. A great race that kept spectators on the edge of their seats right up to the final moments. Blackdog Speed Shop driver Michael Cooper earned a 1st place win driving the #10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro Z/28-R to his second win of the season.
Starting the race from second position, Cooper got the lead into Turn One as pole sitter Jack Baldwin’s Porsche broke on the standing start. With Andy Lee’s Z/28 close behind, the two gapped themselves from the field as a close battle for third place was being fought. Once the Aston Martin of Kris Wilson cleared the third place Kia of Mark Wilkins, he proceeded to chase down the two front runners. On a pass into the braking zone for turn 4 Lee and Wilson got together resulting in a clear trip to victory circle for Cooper.
“I was lucky that I didn’t have to go around Jack at the start” said Cooper. “Andy had to go around Jack and I had the clear run from turn 1 into the keyhole. I was able to grab the lead and go down the back straight in clean air which really helped us (Andy) to get away from the field. Wilson chased us down right at the end but we we’re able to bring it home without being pushed. My thanks to these Blackdog guys who got our Blackdog Speed Shop Team Chevy Z/28 R race car out front today.
Gaples who started 9th got a great start squeezing between the wall and the stalled cars of Gigliotti and Baldwin and moved up 3 spots before the yellow came out to clean up the front straight. In the middle of a race long 4 car battle, Gaples was able to hold on to 6th place for his best finish of the season.
Race 2 saw Cooper charge from 7th on the grid to a solid 4th place finish behind the Mustang of Dean Martin with Andy Lee just behind. Gaples had a clean race to bring his Z/28 R home in 11th place just in front of the Mustang of Jack Roush Jr.
“Fun to be back at Mid Ohio” said Gaples. “Perfect weather for racing. Felt good to be a little more competitive again. The guys at Blackdog Speed Shop gave me a great car to work with and we look forward to Utah.”
“Overall a great points collecting weekend for our Team Chevy Z/28 R Camaro’s” said Sorenson. “Its Great to get a win for our team and we really needed that boost. With 6 races remaining we have to be consistent and hope that we can stay close enough to bring the driver’s championship down to the wire. With Miller Motorsports Park, Sonoma and Mazda Raceway (Laguna) remaining these are three great tracks to finish the season on. Should be great racing!”
After Mid Ohio, Cooper remains in 4th place overall with Gaples moving up to 15th in the Driver’s Championship. Chevrolet is in fifth place in the Manufacturer’s Championship.
